Summer SAVY, Session 4 Day 5, Beyond the Pyramids (1st – 2nd)
What a great last day in Beyond the Pyramids!
Read Aloud: Today’s book was Mummies Made in Egypt. We listened to the book read aloud on a clip from Reading Rainbow. We also read an article from National Geographic Kids about King Tut and saw a photograph of his sarcophagus.
Academic Vocabulary: Today we learned the meaning of embalm, mummify, and sarcophagus.
Academic Content: We virtually met with an archaeologist from Florida Atlantic University this morning. Dr. Napora explained the process of completing a dig and told us about some of her favorite finds. She also explained how carbon dating helps archaeologists determine the age of artifacts they find. The students asked good questions and made connections between the information shared and their Egyptian studies.
We took a virtual field trip to Giza today. The Giza Project at Harvard developed great virtual tours. We toured the Tomb of Queen Meresankh III, The Great Pyramid, and The Sphinx. There are other tours available. If you would like to explore with your child at home, visit https://giza.mused.com/en/tours/
Civilization Simulation: Today, we pretended a rescue crew arrived at the island. The students considered the strengths and challenges of the new civilization. They decided if they would stay on the island or leave on the boat. They wrote a journal entry explaining their choice.
Thank you for giving your child the opportunity to become a junior Egyptologist this week. They were a joy to teach. I hope this class sparked an interest in history, civilizations, and maybe even a future career in an anthropological field!
