Summer SAVY 2023 Session 1, Day 3 – Creative Contraptions (Dunbar)

Day 3: Today we took a deeper dive into simple machines and everyday examples as well as how they are used. Learning about common characteristics and motivations of inventors and the process of invention was also presented and discussed. Then we examined complex machines and how they can form a system. They explored how to combine simple machines as they had free time to build using various materials in the classroom. They went through task cards that have a scenario and they had to work together to discuss how they would solve the problem.

Many of the students were very creative in their contraptions to solve simple problems. They were given the challenge of coming up with a reason for their invention (entertainment, replace something they don’t like to do or make it better, or solve a problem). They were also asked to ponder some ideas of a contraption having at least two simple machines that address their purpose. I am really looking forward to learning more about their ideas. Tomorrow they will write down their reason and idea and sketch it out. After that, they will begin working on their contraption. They are able to work with a partner or independently.

Sometime this evening, ask about their invention ideas and why they want to create them.
