Summer SAVY, Session 5 Day 1, Tremendous Transformations in Writing (3rd-4th)
Greetings!
I hope that you have had a fabulous day! I know we have! We started by getting to know each other and doing some team building. We had fun learning about each other and getting to know more about each other.
We then talked about developing characters, and they began to develop a character based on themselves. They were adding characteristics about themselves (and they could add on since it could be an imaginary version of them). This would be a great opportunity to tell them some of the characteristics that you admire or like about them. It would also be interesting to hear what they thought was important about themselves. What are some of the qualities they would like to focus on?
After working on that, we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and gave special attention to how the artwork enhanced the story and how the small holes were also unique. Students tied in with the number of days he was alive (and yes, THEY figured that out!). They thought that was a great technique. We then watched the Dear Kitten commercial and talked about how that is a type of storytelling and how its format is very different, but the humor and development of the story is sound.
We then talked about how perspective and point of view can impact a story greatly (more coming about that tomorrow) and they practiced writing a story from a different perspective. They had some really cute ideas! You will have to ask them about it! They shared their work with a buddy and everyone was very pleased with the results!
Finally, their homework is to think about a story they like a lot. They can either bring in an example of the story or just tell us about it and I am sure I can find something on the internet to support it. What was your favorite story growing up? Share that information with your child today and this is a great chance to show them or tell them about the stories they loved when they were little or to share your favorite. Why did/do you like it?
Have a great night!
