Summer SAVY, Session 1 Day 2, Common and Practical Chemistry (5th – 6th)
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the second exciting day of SAVY 2024- Practical and Common Chemistry!! We had a fantastic day including making homemade ice cream! Here is a snapshot of what your child learned today.
We reinforced our daily expectations using our class creed, SAVY. The students have done a wonderful job of creating a safe place, keeping one another accountable, making others feel valued, and helping one another.
To review what was taught yesterday, students created their own board games using vocabulary words. Tomorrow, we will play it in class. Our new concepts for the day included variables, states of matter, and physical and chemical properties and changes. To learn these ideas, we completed several labs! Students went through the scientific method and used their knowledge of the differences between an independent, dependent, and controlled variable to complete a lab with baking soda and vinegar. Ask your students about the chemical changes they saw. They also learned how molecules are arranged in solids, liquids, and gases as they visualized and compared molecular arrangements in different phases.
Finally, students conducted experiments to identify and explain physical vs. chemical changes and recognize key indicators of each. In future lab activities, students will classify substances and understand the criteria for their classification.
How You Can Support:
- Discuss Daily Learnings: Ask your child about what they explored and discovered today.
- Encourage Scientific Thinking: Engage in conversations about everyday examples of physical and chemical changes.
- Celebrate Curiosity: At the end of each day, your child will have a choice board on the topic that was discussed during the day. The activities are voluntary. If he/she decides to complete one of the activities, a prize will be awarded the following day. Thank you for the amazing participation from last night. More than half of our class completed an assignment to share with us!
- Support Learning Styles: Help your child apply their learning style techniques at home.
We are excited about the discoveries and learning happening in class. I am also thoroughly enjoying working with your student. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to join them on this scientific journey. They are all a joy to teach!
