Fall Saturday SAVY, Week 3, Engineering Design: Full STEAM Ahead! (1st-2nd)
Today was an amazing day!
The students were able to build three different types of bridges–a beam bridge, a deep beam bridge, and an arch bridge. They tested those bridges for strength by adding weight. Then, they designed their own bridge where they had to have a “barge” pass under, a toy car drive over, and weights added to the top of the bridge to determine strength. During testing, students made adjustments by adding or taking away materials to increase their bridge score (strength and stability).
Thank you for sharing your junior engineers with me over these past 3 weeks and encouraging deep thinking and questioning at home. I hope you have a wonderful fall and end to the year 2023. I look forward to seeing you in the Spring with SAVY 2024.
For a family connection:
- Do you have building blocks at home? The students loved using the 2×2 blocks to build the abutments for their bridges during today’s lesson.
- What other materials can your students use to build?
