Fall Saturday SAVY, Week 3, Becoming a Botanist (K)
Students had a wonderful final day of Saturday SAVY. After sharing observations made over the week of our seeds, we then reviewed parts of the seed and pollination. We also debriefed on the terrariums and considered plants’ needs.
Students then compared a variety of plants. After noticing different leaves, colors, flowers, and stems we reviewed photosynthesis. After describing parts of plants, we compared plants and animals.
Students were enthralled to use microscopes to study parts of stems and root tips. Drawing their different observations.
We ended by learning about biofuel and discussed how plants can be used as a fuel source.
Students took vocab cards home to help them remember the concepts we covered. While they may not recall the extent of all the terms, they might be able to do more research on vocabulary they don’t recall. I hope that their fascination with botany will continue.
Questions to ask our botanists:
- What did you observe in the four different microscope slides?
- How can plants be used as a fuel source?
- How do plants use photosynthesis to help them survive?
