Summer SAVY Session 6, Day 5, Cracking the Case

Posted by on Friday, July 28, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

As students walked into the classroom today, they noticed an area of the classroom was blocked off with caution tape! What happened? The students noticed footprints, a pen, a crumpled note, a mysterious white powder, and a cookie jar with clear fingerprints on it. The crime investigators had a case of the missing cookie! Someone stole a cookie from a teacher’s desk, and they used their knowledge of forensic science to determine “whodunnit”. Students had a mysterious powder lab today that analyzed physical and chemical properties of substances. Students identified the cookie stealer by matching fingerprints and DNA code from the scene of the crime. Another case cracked! Students will be taking home a packet of another crime to extend their knowledge and show off their skills at home!

Students worked to answer this essential question in our culmination of the week’s labs: How can forensic testing be used in solving cases?

You might ask your forensic scientists:

  • How can forensic testing be used in solving cases?
  • Why do forensic scientists use multiple pieces of evidence?
  • Which lab, case, or activity was the most interesting to you? Which was the most effective for solving the case?
