Summer SAVY Session 6, Day 4, Writing with Fire

Posted by on Thursday, July 27, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Today, students put their art skills to work, creating masks to represent their identities, just like the main character of our book! Like Guero, students created all kinds of amazing animal designs, from axolotls to giraffes. Tomorrow, students will have the opportunity to incorporate their masks into the cover page of their memoirs.

In the afternoon, we worked on “postcard poems” and “golden shovel poems.” Students did a great job writing short letters to a friend or loved one from a specific place and using their favorite lines of poetry from our class so far as the structure of a new poem.

In the afternoon, students read more of David Bowles’ They Call Me Guero. We wrote poems inspired by the book, including a poem as text messages and a sonnet.

After lots of great writing, students are almost ready to conclude their memoirs! I can’t wait for them to share the final versions.
