Summer SAVY Session 6, Day 4, Intro to Chemical Engineering (Whiting)

Posted by on Thursday, July 27, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Engineers are in full Engineering Design Process mode! After three days of learning about processes, engineers, and play dough’s properties and materials, we are putting it all to the test.

Students aim to improve a Playdough process. In the morning, they watched a demo of the current process. We described this low-quality play dough’s properties and scored it with the Usage and Texture tests developed yesterday.

In the afternoon, students rearranged the steps of the current play dough process. This was our first full cycle of the Engineering Design Process. Students asked questions, imagined and planned a revised process, created the play dough, and tomorrow, we will make improvements again!

Tonight, ask your engineers:

  • How well did your play dough process work?
  • What were the properties of your first batch of play dough?
  • What ideas do you have to improve in your final tests tomorrow?
  • What tests are using to measure your play dough’s quality?
