Summer SAVY Session 6, Day 4, Harry Potter (Owens)

Posted by on Thursday, July 27, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Today in wizarding school, our young witches and wizards went to Herbology class. We discussed the plants of the wizarding world and compared them to plants from the muggle world. After some great discussions, we potted our own mandrakes (no earmuffs required)! After herbology, students participated in Flying class! There, we learned about the theory of gravity and how falling works. To reinforce these new ideas, we competed in a dragon egg drop competition. Each of our houses divided into teams and crafted a device to protect their dragon egg from a big drop. Each surviving egg earned points for their house towards the House Cup! Students left today with excitement and anticipation for tomorrow’s final competitions and O.W.L. exams.

Exciting topics to discuss with your students:

  • Ask them about real life mandrakes (they may want to borrow a device to show you pictures)!
  • What designs seemed most effective in the egg drop competition?
  • What would they do differently if they were going to design a new egg drop device?
