Summer SAVY Session 6, Day 3, Intro to Chemical Engineering (Whiting)
We had an exciting day of chemical engineering labs today!
In the morning, we explored properties of play dough and how to describe properties. We brainstormed property words, generated the definition that a property is a description of a material, and practiced describing the properties of substances like water, juice, and wipes. Then, students explored and described the properties of high-quality and low-quality play dough. We wrote sentences describing each, and we created two scales to use in our play dough development: The Texture Scale and The Usage Scale.
In the afternoon, we tested materials to begin exploring play dough recipe combinations. We used our Texture and Usage Scales to determine which material combinations had the best properties for play dough.
Tonight, ask your engineers:
- What are the properties of play dough?
- How did you use the engineering process today?
- What do you expect is the best combination for developing the perfect play dough recipe?
