Summer SAVY Session 6, Day 2, Intro to Chemical Engineering (Whiting)

Posted by on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Happy Tuesday! Today in chemical engineering, we explored the very important job of product research.

Each morning, our class answers a would you rather question in our morning meeting. Today, we used our question to explore how to present data; we discussed bar graphs, pie charts, numbers, and tallies.

Our data conversation was crucial to the late morning and afternoon activities! Jenny, a chemical engineer at Creative Juice Company, sent us a message. She does product research at her company and is selecting a color for their new product flavor strawberry-orange juice.

Chemical engineers set to work with the engineering design process and a process for product development.

We created juice color samples from food color and water. Engineers developed their own recipes and mixed the substances! Then, we selected the three favorites for product research.

Other classes from SAVY visited our room to hear the presentations our engineers developed and vote on their favorite product color.

After the vote, we reported our product research back to Jenny using bar graphs, letters, and a report poster.

Chemical engineers worked so hard imagining, planning, and creating juice colors and the process for product research!

Tonight, ask your engineers:

  • What juice color was a consumer favorite? How do you know?
  • Why is product research important?
  • How did you apply the engineering design process today?
