Summer SAVY Session 6, Day 2, Harry Potter (Owens)

Posted by on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Our witches and wizards started off day 2 of wizarding school in charms class. There, we learned about magnets and molecular magnetism. We saw that there are many different types of magnetism and that everything is magnetic! We even watched a frog levitate by using magnetic properties. Armed with this new knowledge, we used our wands to cast our best “Wingardium Leviosa” to levitate a feather! Pictured are the students’ wands they designed in Ollivander’s wand shop! After charms class, we went to alchemy class where we learned about invisible ink. There are many different types of invisible and disappearing inks, and we discussed many of them! Afterwards, everyone created their own Marauder’s Map using laundry detergent and UV light!

Exciting topics to discuss with your students:

  • Ask them to explain why water and wood are magnetic
  • What is in laundry detergent that causes it to glow under UV light?
