Summer SAVY Session 5, Day 5, Dive Into Design

Posted by on Friday, July 21, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

We had the most productive day. Students wowed me with their focus at the start of the day comparing and measuring lengths using inches to the nearest quarter inch. Students learned about perimeter as the distance around a shape. Students started measuring the objects on their pool projects. They are finding the length, width, height, and depth of everything on their pool model such as the perimeter of the pool deck, the depth of the shallow and deep end, the height of the pool table and chairs. They even made life size picture of themselves going to the pool and measured their height in feet and inches.

These students learned new measurement ideas this week by problem solving different situations about helping architects plan for building a community pool.

Lesson 12: accurate measurements require identical units, precise starting and ending points, no gaps, or overlaps in coverage, and partitioning of left-over (non-whole) units (measurement accuracy).
