Summer SAVY Session 4, Day 2, Fractions at Work

Posted by on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Day 2:  Today, we focused on identifying improper fractions and mixed number fractions. The students explored common denominators in order to rename and compare fractions by finding a common denominator. They are able to identify equivalent fractions and order fractions such as improper and mixed numbers.

Our book characters, Tori and Jordan, continue to explore the family’s attic and find awards for the great frog jumping contest. The “Frolicking Frog” activity encouraged students to use fractional parts of whole numbers and improper fractions.

We applied learning of our new mathematical vocabulary: Common denominators, Denominator, Equivalent fractions, Fractions (common), Mixed numbers, Proper fractions, and Numerator

Some dinner table questions:

  • How did you design your origami jumping frog?
  • How many common factors can you find that go evenly into 28, 33, 40… move beyond these numbers to practice multiplication and division to determine fractions and common factors.
  • Show me how to locate fractions of whole numbers, quarters, halves, and eighths.

Have a great evening!

Warmly, Ms. Marshall and Mr. Yiwei
