Summer SAVY Session 4, Day 1, Fractions at Work

Posted by on Monday, July 10, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Day 1:  We are exploring our way through the concepts of fractions to have a “fraction sense” rather than only following algorithms for math. Today we focused on equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions. The students created their own visual models of fraction strips less than or equal to 1 whole.

Our book friends, Tori and Jordan, have embarked on an exciting trip into the past in their great, great grandparents’ store to explore the deep meaning of fractions and learn to compare, order, and operate with rational numbers in fraction form.

We applied learning of our new mathematical vocabulary: Denominator, Equivalent fractions, Fractions (common), Identity property or multiplication, Numerator, Right-hand identity property of division, and Unit fraction.

Some dinner table questions:

  • What strategy did you use to fold and mark your fraction strips?
  • What is the easiest way to simplify fractions?
  • Practice simplifying fractions of your own examples.

 Have a wonderful evening!

Warmly, Ms. Marshall and Yiwei
