Summer SAVY Session 3, Day 1 – Games Galore

Posted by on Monday, June 26, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Day 1:  We had such a great time getting to know our Games Galore SAVY students today! We started our day with an “All About Me” activity. Students shared some of their favorite things, and we compiled data to look for trends. When analyzing our collected data, we talked about probability based on data sets. For example, based on our data set, the probability of a student choosing a dog as their favorite animal would be 4 out of 15. The probability of Math being chosen as a favorite subject would be 7 out of 15 based on our data set.

Students shared ideas about what it means to be fair and what makes a game fair. They explored the chances of an event happening using a variety of tools (color spinners, number spinners, coins, 6-sided dice, and 8-sided dice). At the end of the day, students worked in Probability Stations to collect, record, and interpret data. They even got the chance to create their own simple game.

Some guiding questions for dinner conversation tonight may include:

  • What makes a game fair?
  • How can you test to prove whether a game is fair?
  • What is your favorite game? Is it fair? Why or why not?

Tomorrow, we will delve deeper into probability by focusing on determining, describing, and representing degrees of likelihood.

Have a nice evening!
