Summer SAVY Session 2, Day 5 – Chemical Spill

Posted by on Friday, June 23, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Day 5:  For the grand finale of our Chemical Spill course, we started by reviewing the work we’ve done this last week which included: conducting water flow experiments, designing road detours, topographical maps, pH tests on a variety of substances, neutralizing and dilution, and the final assessment of the acidic level of the chemical spill and neutralizing it.

Students then worked on their posters and presented their group projects on a variety of topics from Chemical reactions to oil spills and the impact of spills on the environment.
Questions over dinner:
What knowledge did you use to neutralize the chemical spill?
Did anything surprise you when you tested the pH levels of different liquids?
Were there any pH-neutral substances that you tested?
What are some facts from your presentation?
What field of science are you most interested in?
It has been a full week of experimenting and learning and it has been a pleasure working with these curious and eager minds.
