Summer SAVY Session 2, Day 5 – Archaeology

Posted by on Friday, June 23, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Day 5: Today in Uncovering Secrets of the Past: Archaeology 101, we reviewed the content covered this week.  We also looked at three specific time periods and artifacts that might be found from them: Modern- 1900 to present day, Colonial- 1600-1800, and Pre-historic before 1600.  The students completed their simulation digs after lunch.  It was done in pairs and trios.  The students were able to practice working as a team.  It was challenging to find all of the “artifacts” in the layers of soil.

After the dig, we came back inside and analyzed our artifacts.  I was able to let the students keep some of the items.  I hope they will be good reminders of our learning.  Finally, we reviewed the perspective of a superintendent who wrote to say that the building of the new school was more important than archaeology.  We discussed points of view and cause and effect.  It was a very good discussion.

Thank you so much for sending your students to participate in this course.  I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them and guiding them through the content.

Sincerely,

Dr. Dunlap
