Summer SAVY Session 2, Day 3 – Witty Wordplay

Posted by on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Day 3:  This Wednesday, things heated up for our Witty Wordsmiths!

We began our day with a visit from children’s book author Jessica Young. Jessica gave a wonderful presentation where she introduced our students to onomatopoeia, rhyme, and alliteration in a few of her books. Students left today’s author’s session with a free copy of her book “Haggis and Tank Unleashed: All Paws on Deck”.
Starting in our midday session, students used their new books as a springboard to write poems centered around onomatopoeia that stood out to them. We then read another one of Young’s books, “Spy Guy”, to learn about and dissect sentence parts. We diagrammed sentences in “Spy Guy” to differentiate between subject and predicate, as well as identify nouns and verbs.
To end the day, students continued working on their board games. Tomorrow we will delve deeper into synonyms, antonyms, and other parts of speech, and start persuasive writing.
It was a great and busy day!
