Summer SAVY Session 2, Day 3 – Archaeology

Posted by on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Day 3:  Today in Uncovering Secrets of the Past: Archaeology 101, we reviewed our dinner discussions from Tuesday night. The students were able to share interesting thoughts on how our lives would be impacted by changes in the soil. We were also able to make final observations on our decomposer lab experiments with bananas. The students were able to make inferences about how decomposers affect artifacts. We also looked at and compared tools that archaeologists may use in the field when completing an excavation. We are examining some aspects of laws that impact the study of archaeology. As a class, we analyzed a primary source regarding property that was owned by Daniel Boone. The students also learned about the Kennewick Man.

Tonight’s Dinner Discussion is – Talk with your parents about the Kennewick Man and what you learned today. Think about your perspective on whether he should be studied or buried.

There are many laws and ethics that relate to archaeology. We were only able to touch on the subject. I am looking forward to seeing the students tomorrow.
