Summer SAVY Session 2, Day 2 – Common and Practical Chemistry (Crooke)
Day 2: We started the day learning that cells have protein, lipids, and carbohydrates as well as DNA/RNA. Students then tested foods for starch, sugar, protein, and fats and used that to identify a mystery food. It turns out the mystery food, which was a protein shake mixed with fruit loops, was a good source of sugar, and protein, and contained detectable levels of starch. We then spent time learning about the periodic table and the types of chemical bonds. We related that to electrolytes and tested a variety of drinks to see if they conducted electricity and thus were a good source of electricity. Gatorade had a similar conductivity as salt water; however, sugar water was not a good source of electrolytes. Finally, we ended our day with the slime of the day. Today we altered our recipe by making fluffy slime by adding shaving cream.
