Summer SAVY Session 2, Day 2 – Chemical Spill
Day 2: We started our day by discussing the importance of knowing the rate at which the mysterious liquid from the chemical spill was flowing into the creek. We then did Water Flow experiments using a slow drop bottle which simulated the spilled liquid flow into the creek and a stronger flow representing the stream current. We then did some accurate measuring and math to ascertain how much water flowed in each per hour.
The afternoon experiments tested the pH of a variety of liquids and students recorded their findings on their pH Data Collection sheet. We then analyzed their test results looking for patterns.
Questions over dinnertime:
- What is hydrology?
- How did you calculate the water flow of the creek and then the flow of the spilled chemical?
- What does pH indicate?
- Did you notice any particularly acidic substances in your experiments?
We look forward to more careful scientific experimentation tomorrow,
