Summer SAVY Session 2, Day 1 – Witty Wordplay

Posted by on Monday, June 19, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Day 1:  It was a great day for the Witty Wordsmiths, and we hope it was a great day for you as well!

After a pre-assessment to gauge student level, students engaged in a book exploration to uncover the use of language by the author to tell various stories within the same book. Later in the morning, our class took part in a songwriting seminar to stretch our muscles.

After lunch, students made their own systems and started a comic to illustrate the interconnectivity of each element. To end the day, we learned about Mesopotamia and early forms of writing. Students translated cuneiform to standard English.

Some key takeaways from today:

  • Systems are made of many elements, and each part works together.
  • Songs and stories are systems of language.
  • Stories use many different types of language, and small changes in word spellings can change the direction of the story.

Tomorrow, we’ll be delving into the various parts of speech, exploring elemental changes in language systems, and doing a deep dive into a few of my favorite books.

See you soon,

Ms. Meaghan and Ms. Ann Louise
