Summer SAVY Session 2, Day 1 – Common and Practical Chemistry (Crooke)

Day 1:  Happy Monday, y’all!

Today was our first day of Common and Practical Chemistry. After getting to know each other and learning how to be safe in our lab, we focused on biochemistry. We learned about the structure of DNA and how to isolate DNA from various foods using common household ingredients like salt, detergent, and rubbing alcohol. We found that dawn worked a lot better than tide to isolate DNA. Finally, we all had loads of fun with our first slime of the day. Throughout the week, we will be experimenting to determine the ultimate slime recipe. Today we did regular slime with glue and lens solution.
