Summer SAVY Session 2, Day 1 – Chemical Spill
Day 1: It was wonderful to welcome so many eager scientists today to our week-long inquiry class Chemical Spill.
Today the students determined what scientists are, what they do, and why the techniques they use are important to achieving investigative research. They will be thinking like scientists throughout the week.
We then introduced students to the initial problem statement of the chemical spill. We will be investigating this problem during the week and students will look for a resolution to the problem. Information about the spill will be presented throughout the week, and we started today by looking at the vicinity of the spill site. Students looked at a road map on which they plotted detours for traffic. We then discussed topographical details which might impact the site and were also given a weather report for the day of the spill.
Questions to ask at dinnertime:
- What do scientists do?
- What is the final step for scientists after making meaning from their experiments?
- What did you learn about the chemical spill today?
- What does corrosive mean?
I look forward to more inquiries and discoveries tomorrow,
Jacqueline Kent
