Summer SAVY Session 1, Day 1 – The Makings of America

Posted by on Monday, June 12, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Day 1:  Today in the Makings of America: Rebellion, Revolt, and Resolution we analyzed “The Rich Lady Over the Sea.” This was a Revolutionary song that portrays the relationship between the British Colonies and America as a mother/daughter relationship. We also learned many vocabulary terms such as correlation, repeal, thruppence, and Stamp Act. The students began discussing the concept of tax and where taxes initiate and what their purpose is. We also discussed fairness and how decisions are made. The students analyzed the following Acts of Parliament: The Stamp Act, Sugar Act, Quartering Act, Declaratory Act, Townshend Acts, and the Tea Act.

Tonight their “homework” is – Imagine that you are a member of Parliament or an American colonist in in the summer of 1765. Think about what your point of view on the Stamp Act would have been and write a sentence explaining your point of view and three or more sentences explaining your reasons. I am looking forward to hearing which perspective each student chose and why.
