Summer SAVY 2023 Session 1, Day 5 – Agricultural Engineering

Posted by on Monday, June 19, 2023 in blog, SAVY.

Day 5:  Whew! What an amazing way to end the week! We had the pleasure of meeting agricultural engineers from the non-profit HoneyBee Tennessee and the Institute of Agriculture, UT Extension. Both guest speakers shared a lot of information on agricultural engineering, Integrated Pest Management, pesticides, flowers, pollination, and insects.

Students were so amazing when presenting their hand pollinators and explaining their decisions of textured materials for pollinating, based on our science experiment. It has been such a wonderful experience working with this brilliant group of leaders, problem-solvers, creators, explorers, and ENGINEERS!

Things to discuss with your SAVY child:

  • Test hand pollinators at home with baking soda, pepper, or other fine powder that is similar to pollen.
  • Explain why you chose your design and materials.
  • What is Integrated Pest Management?
  • Name and label the 5 parts of an insect. What do some have that others do not?
  • List parts of a flower.
  • Why are pollinators so important?
  • What is an agricultural engineer?

Have a wonderful summer!

Warmly, Ms. Marshall and Ms. Yuka
