Career Connections at SAVY 2019: Session 2, Day 4 – Strength and Structure of Engineering Materials (Rising 7th)

Posted by on Thursday, July 18, 2019 in Grade 7, SAVY.

It’s already Thursday! I can’t believe this week went by so quickly.

Today we learned about macroscopic and microscopic failure surfaces.  Essentially, how we can look at a broken part and determine the type of failure. The three types of failure we focused on were ductile, brittle, and fatigue failure.  There are different macroscopic and microscopic features that characterize each failure type.  Ask your student if they can describe the difference.

This afternoon we started working on our final projects.  We split the class into three groups.  Each group was given a broken part.  Each group is working diligently on describing how the part failed, the forces it failed at, and doing a redesign to prevent future failure.  It’s a culmination of everything we learned this week, and it’s going great.

I can’t wait to see everyone at open house tomorrow! We’ll be doing a poster presentation of our final project.
