Career Connections at SAVY 2019: Session 2, Day 3 – Strength and Structure of Engineering Materials (Rising 7th)

Posted by on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 in Grade 7, SAVY.

Today was our day of engineering ethics.  We started out our morning by reading and translating the engineering code of ethics as stated by the National Society for Professional Engineers (NSPE).  We then discussed a lot of different engineering scenarios with a lot of complicated ethical problems.  Ask your students about these scenarios! Ask them if they would ever do anything considered unethical.

This afternoon we focused on a single famous engineering disaster, the Hyatt Regency Disaster, on its 38th anniversary.  We split into three groups, with each group being lawyers to represent each interested party in the disaster.  Our trial was excellent and we decided as a class that the individual engineers should be held liable.

Our final activity of the day was creating one large flow chart summarizing all the math we’ve done so far, and discussing how it relates to failure.  This is important, because tomorrow we’ll be starting one of our final topics, failure analysis.
