Summer Career Connections at SAVY 2018: Session 6, Day 3 – Science of Emotion (Rising 7th)
Dear SAVY Parents,
This morning, students continued to craft their emotion research questions. As a class, students helped each other identify the independent and dependent variables of their classmates’ proposed research questions, determined different ways to measure the variables in their experiments, and came up with ways to increase the internal validities of their experiments.
Then, what started as a lecture on basic brain structures became a student-incited introduction to psychological disorders! During this (more than welcomed) tangent, we discussed how demographics affect one’s risk of developing a psychological disorder, sociopathy, and one of the major debates in the world of psychology: nature vs. nurture. After this discussion, we returned to the planned lecture to learn about the anatomy of a neuron as well as the brain areas associated with certain emotions. If your child wants to learn more about brain structures while engaging their artistic side, we recommend this coloring book!
After ORA (and a fun game of lab charades!), students learned the basics of how to read a scientific paper. In particular, they focused on abstracts, the introductory paragraph of a scientific paper that outlines what will be discussed in detail later in said paper.
Parents, please consider joining us at our Open House this Friday (7/27) from 3:15 to 3:45 PM. This is a great opportunity for you to see what your child has been working on all week!
Looking forward to Thursday!
