Summer SAVY 2018: Session 3, Day 5 – Digital Storytelling (Rising 5th/6th)

Posted by on Friday, June 29, 2018 in Grade 5, Grade 6, SAVY.

This morning we watched a short clip of author Neil Gaiman telling a story from his childhood as our story bit. We discussed how Gaiman uses the storytelling elements we have been talking about throughout the week. He is an author, so his delivery was different of those that we have seen, but we discussed how oral storytelling and writing may differ in construction and performance of their story.

The students got the chance to share their micro-stories from yesterday with the class. We also listened to the podcasts the students made of Wednesday. This was a great time for the kids to share their work with their peers and see the different creative ideas and directions they went. It was a lot of fun to be able to do this as a community!

We then discussed the importance of being a good online citizen and what that means. We watched a video of a writer in London who created a fake restaurant and made it the #1 rated restaurant on Trip Advisor in London. He was doing this to comment on the validity of online rating systems, but it shows exactly how much power the internet has. Once you put something up, it is out there forever and can have major consequences.

For the remainder of the afternoon, we went to the computer lab to finish up final projects. The students have worked so hard this week preparing their stories to show you! Once they were finished, they went through a workshopping process with their peers to make edits to their film. They also had the chance to share their final projects with the whole class.

It was so nice to meet you at open house and it has been a pleasure!
