Fall SAVY 2017, Day 1 – Genetic Engineering: The Science of Modified Organisms (5th/6th)

Posted by on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 in Grade 5, Grade 6, SAVY.

Welcome to Genetic Engineering: The Science behind GMOs!

Hello parents and students! We had a great first day!

We learned all about microbiology and what it means to be a scientist! We went over good bacteria and bad bacteria as well as some crazy ones that can live in temperatures near boiling (extremophiles)!!!
We also talked about DNA, genes, and how we create proteins! (aka the central dogma)
As a class we sampled dust, keyboards, tables, hands, and anything else we could find around the room to see bacteria under the microscope and grow them in our own agar plates!
Next week we will see what grew…it’s gonna be pretty gross!

See you then!

Josh
