SAVY Saturday, Week 3, Matter Mysteries, Hayes (1st-2nd)

Posted by on Monday, February 10, 2025 in blog, SAVY.

We had a fantastic final day at SAVY in Matter Mysteries! Students reviewed and applied their understanding of concepts, including matter, states of matter, change, properties, and the scientific process.

We played many review games and activities, such as “I Have, Who Has.” Then, we made interactive concept maps to show the connections between key academic vocabulary and played a very competitive Kahoot!

We reviewed the scientific process many times today! Our little scientists had the opportunity to visit middle school SAVY students taking a course on neuroscience. These students had created experiments for our students to engage with and ask questions about. After lunch, our scientists took the reins and demonstrated their understanding in a science experiment of their own – making slime! We compared this to Oobleck and its properties from last week. This experiment taught new concepts of physical versus chemical changes.

Finally, students mastered concepts through theater. We created matter skits and props and acted them out for the class. Most of our skits showed the properties of each state of matter or the effect of change on each state!

To further enrich your student’s understanding of these concepts, consider the following activities:

  • Read together Matter Matters, a text that was sent home with each student.
  • Analyze your student’s slime and research the chemical change that boric acid and baking soda cause in glue.
  • Design your own experiment and go through the steps of the scientific process.
  • Explore NASA’S KSNN (Kid’s Science News Network). This site has 30-second “fastbreak” cartoon summaries of scientific concepts geared for students in grades K-2, which could provide reinforcements for any course content.

Thank you for sharing your SAVY scientists with us! We had a great course.
