Summer SAVY, Session 5 Day 4, Exploring the Human Mind (7th-8th)
Dear Exploring the Human Mind parents,
Following the same structure we have been using so far, we began with some fun icebreakers to get the group warmed up. Then, we jumped into a discussion on human emotions—where do they come from? How do we experience them? How do we understand other peoples’ emotions? The students were highly interested in this lecture and provided many great examples of emotional learning in their own lives.
The rest of the day was spent in the computer lab, preparing for our poster presentations. Students completed their literature reviews, drafted their methods, discussed possible results, and identified key limitations that should be addressed by future studies. They also met in pairs to provide peer feedback on each other’s projects. It was wonderful to see how respectfully and enthusiastically they identified strengths and encouraged one another to address limitations. Their collaborative efforts really shone through!
Tomorrow, we will spend the day in the classroom, putting together our poster presentations and sharing our research projects with the class. I look forward to seeing the output and creativity of all their hard work.
Tonight, please feel free to engage in these dinner table questions:
- What are emotions, and why are they important for human functioning?
- How do I emphasize the main takeaways from a research presentation in a way that is interesting to the general population?
- Why is peer review important to the field of psychology?
Sincerely,
Abby
