SAVY 2019: Session 6, Day 5 – Games Galore (Rising 1st/2nd)

Posted by on Friday, July 26, 2019 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

We were all excited to know that families were coming to visit us to see inside our Games Galore, Math Behind the Games course and play games! Our morning began with our final Guess Again game. This one was the toughest challenge with 10 items and lots of predicting to do. We had two guessers and two recorders for this challenge and the other students were really engaged in helping the team predict the outcome. As it turned out, our guessers were not 100% correct in identifying the 10 colors in the bag; however, one of the students figured it out and then explained his strategy in correctly determining the correct colors and number of each.

Next, we played a game with partners, called Lucky 6 to determine game fairness or unfairness. In this game, using dice, and six spaces on the game board, Player A gets to move one space with a 6 roll, and Player B gets to rolls when it is not a 6. After playing, students said this was not a fair game, so they got to change the rules to make if fair and to experiment by playing the changed rules.

Soon after that, our friends who are in the Matter course (grades 1-2 like us), accepted our invitation to come to our floor and play the games we made. This was so much fun! Since we were the hosts, we taught our friends how to play and what the rules were, and then we played the game with them. There was such a look of satisfaction on our faces by getting a real world chance to get feedback from peers, and feel good about our game designs!

Finally, we played some more games to determine fairness and then we got to see our families! It has been a fabulous week of fun and games and learning the math behind the games.

Sincerely,

Karen Tyson
