SAVY 2019: Session 5, Day 5 – Wind and Wings (Rising 1st/2nd)

Posted by on Friday, July 19, 2019 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

What a great week! We started the morning building some insect models and including some flight features into our models. We also spent time today wrapping up our learning where students had some time to share what they learned throughout the week.

Thank you for coming to open house! The students appreciated sharing what they learned from you today. If your student is really interested birds, insects, flight, or any science topic, there are many great things that you can do at home to continue the learning. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Go for nature walks and take a small notebook for sketches and observations. On our walks around campus, students loved pointed out the different birds and insects they saw or heard!
  2. Visit the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website, https://www.allaboutbirds.org. This is a great resource for information about birds.
  3. Check out the Science Comics These are great graphic novels about different science topics.
  4. Participate in a citizen science project. These projects are a way for scientists to collect data across the world. Some projects involve counting urban birds or submitting different kinds of data about animals. Visit https://pbskids.org/scigirls/citizen-science or https://www.zooniverse.org/ to help get started.
