SAVY 2019: Session 4, Day 4 – Fractions at Work (Rising 3rd/4th)

Posted by on Thursday, July 11, 2019 in Grade 3, Grade 4, SAVY.

It’s hard to believe that the week is almost over! This morning we used our number skills to work on some fraction problems and number puzzles. We worked on puzzles that were similar to magic squares where numbers had to be placed in a grid with sides equal to the same sum. The students shared some great strategies for solving these including thinking about the placement of even and odd numbers. They came up with some rules for where to put numbers, and we are going to look tomorrow at more solutions to see if the rules work.

After lunch, we enjoyed another popsicle. This time they were mostly frozen. We had determined that the freezer in the classroom building is not good, and we feel sorry for the college students that have to live here. We also put our fraction skills to use making a special treat to share with you at open house tomorrow. We can’t wait to share what we have learned and our special treat!

At the end of the day, Emma from The Little Art House came and taught us about the rule of thirds in art and discuss how fractions play an important role in creative projects. The students enjoyed looking at different pictures and thinking about this rule. They also created their own artwork!
