SAVY 2019: Session 4, Day 4 – Creative Contraptions (The Wesbys) (Rising 1st/2nd)

Posted by on Thursday, July 11, 2019 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

Wow, we’ve had four fantastic days of learning!
Our day started with the game, ”Guess What’s In My Box.”  An object was placed inside a box and taped so the students could not open it. The students had to make observations about what they thought was inside the box.  Once they had a few seconds to observe, they could only ask a question that provided a ”yes” or ”no” answer.   The goal was for the students to listen and look for clues and formulate more detailed questions. This game created excitement and boosted their critical thinking skills.
Today’s instructional focus was simple machines.  We used a KWL chart to document our thoughts and questions about simple machines.  Later, students had five challenges where they had to build and demonstrate how to use a simple machine made from plastic materials (wedge, inclined plane, pulley, wheel and axel, and lever).
Tomorrow, our SAVY Scholars will design and create their creative contraption using the engineering design process!
