Summer SAVY 2019: Session 3, Day 3 – Powerful Programming (Rising 5th/6th)

Posted by on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 in Grade 5, Grade 6, SAVY.

Today was an exciting day at Powerful Programming. Yesterday, we noticed that many students wanted to code their agents to spread out and keep moving so today we played a game to simulate those actions and think about how we control those commands within our own bodies. Then we worked to turn those actions into code that we could use in our models. Since combining our efforts and working together had such an amazing impact, we decided to troubleshoot more of our ideas together and students helped each other code challenging procedures. Tomorrow, we’ll have the opportunity to share our models with an authentic audience and work through any continuing challenges.

This afternoon, we took a field trip to a medical imaging lab to learn how programming is used in the real world. Dr. Bennett Landman showed us his office, the lab where his graduate students work, the types of problems they are considering and how his field has developed over time. Students learned the importance of learning math and programming skills and were very impressed by the spinning brain! We had a great experience overall and we’re looking forward to another productive day of collaborative programming tomorrow.
