Summer SAVY 2019: Session 3, Day 3 – Beyond the Pyramids (Rising 1st/2nd)

Posted by on Wednesday, June 26, 2019 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

Dear SAVY Parents,

Today was quite the whirlwind of learning and activity!  The students engaged in an amazing text, Senefer, A Young Genius in Egypt.  Through this text, each student developed an even greater understanding of ancient Egypt.  Students used Mrs. Byrd as a scribe and dictated their thinking about the Egyptian agricultural system! They learned of the market places, the barter economy, and even more information about the workings of the educational system and the unique Egyptian number system.  How are these systems different from our own?  How are they the same?  What lessons and we observe about change over time?
Students engaged in mathematics themselves!  Mathematics is the study of quantities, change, structure, and space.  Like engineers, we moved items through space and compared which was more efficient.  We used mathematical language to explain our strategies in making two-digit addition calculations (and some multiplication) just like Senefer.  Students discussed and folded two-dimensional objects to make a three-dimensional pyramid.  Of course, we signed our works with hieroglyphs in Egyptian style!
We hope you are planning to join us for Open House on Friday at 3:15 so that we can share with you all that we are learning and doing! Thank you for making this week’s learning opportunities available to your child!
Mrs. Byrd
