Summer SAVY 2019: Session 3, Day 1 – Powerful Programming (Rising 5th/6th)

Posted by on Monday, June 24, 2019 in Grade 5, Grade 6, SAVY.

We had a great first day at Powerful Programming! Students made new friends and enjoyed learning to code. When we started most students said they didn’t know how to code and no one had coded in NetLogo before. By the end of the day, every student was able to make an agent replicate basic animal movements in NetLogo! Agents are the “beings” we create in NetLogo that can follow instructions. Over the course of the week, we will be creating animal agents from the ground up, coding everything from their appearance to their movements and more!

This afternoon students chose an animal that will serve as the subject of their final project and researched how that animal behaves in its natural habitat. We played the Zoo Game to simulate how our animals move in their environment and we worked together with our peers to code common animal movements that will be useful as we continue to develop our projects. Tomorrow we’ll learn how to edit our agents’ shapes to look like our chosen animals and code them to move as they would in nature.

We appreciate everyone’s hard work today and we’re looking forward to another great day tomorrow!
