Summer SAVY 2019: Session 2, Day 4 – Environmental Explorations (Rising 1st/2nd)

Posted by on Thursday, June 20, 2019 in Grade 1, Grade 2, SAVY.

WOW! What. A. Day!
We started our day talking about words like precipitation, percolation, evaporation, and condensation in a process the students now know as The Water Cycle. Did you know there is NO NEW WATER? The water we use is cleaned and reused! We have talked about that a couple of times this week, too and the students were fascinated.
The next thing we studied today was soil– what it is made from, the “critters” that form it and how those critters form it, then the purpose of soil.  We learned a song about topsoil, subsoil, and bedrock and a few hand motions to help us remember where it is located.  We made a sample of the Earth’s crust and we also learned which type of soil holds water the best.
Your student made one additional thing today that they want me to keep a secret until tomorrow at open house.  However, they were VERY excited about it and can hardly wait to show it to you. 🙂
Today, we talked about how different plants need different amounts of water.  Maybe tonight you and your student can look at different plants together to determine which might need more water.
It has been a great week and we will finish our week strong together tomorrow, talking about erosion, oil spills, and pollution.
Until next time, stay SAVY!
