Summer SAVY 2019: Session 2, Day 1 – Ecological Expedition (Rising 3rd/4th)

Posted by on Monday, June 17, 2019 in Grade 3, Grade 4, SAVY.

What an amazing first day! Mr. Harel and I were so impressed with the critical thinking, creativity, and enthusiasm from our students. We began our ecological expedition of becoming ecologists through learning about the concept of interactions! Students explored Vanderbilt’s campus and identified interactions between living and nonliving things. After categorizing our interactions, we developed generalizations that we will apply to each of our activities this week. We continued to explore the concept of interactions more in depth by reading The Great Kapok Tree. In this story, animals try to convince a man not to cut down the great tree. Students researched the current issue of deforestation from multiple perspectives, and we had our first class debate! We ended our time together through exploring the interactions in art through visual illusions and analyzing some of George Seurat’s paintings. Tomorrow students will create their own pointillism painting! Looking forward to a great week!
