Spring SAVY 2019, Day 3 – The Water-Energy Nexus (5th/6th)
Today in Water-Energy Nexus, we began Lesson 2 – Water Filtration, in which we learned about water filtration via size exclusion, the principal in which we can refuse a solution’s contaminants by designing a filtration system in which the paths for flow are too small for the contaminants (e.g. microbes, proteins, and ions), but big enough for water. We also went through the process of gathering preliminary information before beginning a research project, which we called the “literature review.” We closed out the day with the Water Filtration Activity in which we designed, tested, redesigned, and retested our own filters. The goal was to neutralize the pH and reduce the salinity of a simulated waste water solution.
