Summer SAVY 2018: Session 4, Day 5 – Fractions at Work (Rising 3rd/4th)
Today was such a great celebration of a full week of learning! The Urban Planning project culmination was impressive! Our whole class discussion of deeper questions was grand. It’s a joy to see emerging critical thinking skills in such young mathematicians.
The synthesis aspect of our day wrapped a bow around all the fraction concepts. Some mastery, some new knowledge leading to more questions, some connections made where there were previously isolated concepts – it’s fun to see children grasp a love of learning.
We presented our urban planning project, but also shared our self-portraits [based on grids] one at a time. Practicing the skill of offering specific positive feedback for each other was wonderful. These mathematicians have developed some dear friendships and kind appreciation fo
r each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
The student’s course evaluations denoted some fun highlights of our week: Pancake Pantry kitchen tour, ‘getting to do hard math’, making friends, working together on the Urban Plan, FUN! Thank you for a super SAVY week in Fraction Land.
