Summer SAVY 2018: Session 4, Day 4 – Intro to Business (Rising 5th/6th)
Students learned today about how supply and demand affect the stock market. We thought about how to approach selecting a stock and then considered whether or not it is even possible to consistently select above average stocks. The students then heard about the efficient markets hypothesis and developed reasons for and against the hypothesis. We will continue this tomorrow as it was still a little fuzzy at the end of the day.
Hard to believe that tomorrow is already Friday. That means our main project is coming to a close. Students worked diligently this morning on their stock proposals for tomorrow. They seem like they are ready to provide sound investment advice to the board of trustees (Emily and I) tomorrow.
The class market continued today and students now are almost to the point of having full information available to them. Trading is picking up speed as information is easier to access. We’ll see if we can hit Wall Street pace tomorrow!
Our most important discussion is yet to come as tomorrow we will we talk about the ethics of investing. Would you invest in a company that you think is doing something morally questionable? Would you invest in a company that provides people with health hazards? I am looking forward to hearing the student perspectives on these issues.
I can’t wait to see the students’ finished presentations tomorrow.
