Summer SAVY 2018: Session 4, Day 1 – Adventures in Algebra (Rising 2nd)

Posted by on Monday, July 9, 2018 in Grade 2, SAVY.

Happy First Day!

Our Algebra class is digging deep into a unit on algebraic expressions, equations, and variables. The mathematicians created concept maps to assess their prior knowledge of the skills/concepts being taught in this particular unit. They also created concept maps about themselves to become familiar with each other.

They were introduced to a problem at the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in which the plans for incorporating more nature-themed artwork are on hold because the Medical Board of Directors is worried about the cost of the project. The young mathematicians were informed that they were chosen to be members of the board of directors. They must synthesize their understanding of solving equations by becoming store owners and selling merchandise to help generate money for the Children’s Hospital. They will be required to have two types of signs to advertise the special deals in their stores: one that uses a single equation and one that uses a set of equations. They will showcase their creations during Open House on Friday morning. The mathematicians were also introduced to variables, simple equations, and the “guess and check method” of solving problems.

Sincerely,
Dr. P.
