Summer SAVY 2018: Session 2, Day 5 – Story Gardening (Rising 3rd and 4th)

Posted by on Friday, June 22, 2018 in Grade 3, Grade 4, SAVY.

We wrapped up a wonderful week today, finishing works-in-progress and beginning new ones! Students discussed present and past point of view and shared memories with the group. They wrote pieces based on their memories incorporating sensory details and transposed them into the present tense to give immediacy to their writing. Next, they took time to finish their stories and share them with the group. They took turns giving feedback and making observations about each other’s work. After adding color to black-and-white illustrations, they used them as inspiration for mini-stories, recalling the parts of a traditional narrative arc and implementing them in a very short piece of text to go with their illustrations. Students brainstormed questions and discussed pieces in their portfolios to share with their parents. We really enjoyed meeting all of the families and having students share their work and create characters with their loved ones. Thanks so much for the opportunity to work with your children. We hope they continue their creative explorations of story throughout the summer and beyond! Wherever your summer days take you, encourage them to bring their notebooks for jotting down ideas. Here are some excellent resources Nashville has to offer for inspiration:
