Summer SAVY 2018: Session 1, Day 3 – Dabbling with DNA, Dr. O (Rising 3rd and 4th)

Posted by on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 in Grade 3, Grade 4, SAVY.

Hey Parents and Students!

We had a great Day 3! Depending on your perspective… we are halfway done! or, we still have halfway to go!

This morning we finished up our GMO talk and students got to create their own hybrid organism (they had some pretty great ideas!…see photos below)

We also started our corn GMO experiment to see if animals can tell the difference between non-GMO vs GMO corn. They will be left outside for the remainder of the week and we will check on them each day.

In our computer lab, after lunch, we completed another 3 bar charts of student data for hitchhiker’s thumb, rolling tongue, and attached earlobes. We will print these out but unfortunately not in color. Please bring a thumb drive on Friday when you come so you can save their data and take it home. They have worked really hard!

This afternoon we got to dig deeper into genetics and tools scientist use like punnett squares. Students should remember terms like dominant and recessive as well as genotype vs phenotype…dinner conversation…maybe???

Finally we ended the day with our crazy traits game (check out photos). This game let students see the variance in genetic traits and how each one of us is made special!

See you all tomorrow!

Dr.O
